The ‘6027 Project’ Documentation Exhibition

Documentation of the mural produced at Admiral Park (Joondalup, WA) will be exhibited in Blend(er) Gallery from 3-8th of April. Photographs and video by Marc Ash and John Pearse aim to highlight the different artistic approaches Trevor and myself used in the murals production, revealing our individual cultural influences and the processes of curated collaboration. Collaboration is now largely taken for granted as one of the numerous ways that artists can choose to operate. Despite this, artistic collaboration still raises some interesting and crucial questions about the nature of authorship, authenticity and the artists’ relationships to their works & audiences that inevitably disrupt the persistent and popular image of the artist as a ‘heroic’ solitary figure.

This collaboration bares eloquent witness to the sensitivity and respect with which the artists responded to one another and the surrounding community. The modifications we did make and the passages of over painting are testament to a working atmosphere of mutual appreciation and acceptance.

At the heart of this exhibition are original designs from participants of the art workshops that we held at Belridge High School. Participants worked with many mediums; often pencils, pens, pastels and paint on paper with a loose and spontaneous style that shows a fascination with the process of creating.

‘The 6027 Project’ opens at 6pm on Monday 2nd April 2012 at the blend(er) gallery in Joondalup, Western AustraliaThe ‘6027 Project’ Documentation Exhibition

Timelapse failure of the background  preparation of Admiral park mural. Due to high winds and camera issues, it didn’t really work out like it should have done. The camera blew over after this, and the tripod broke so further time-lapse wasn’t to be. It does show however, a new process for me. To produce the background for the mural, I used a powered fence sprayer, which operates like a basic airbrush with incredibly wide spray. Inspired by the process of Katharina Grosse, and the mark making by the young people in the Belridge workshop, the industrial processes of the fence sprayer allowed quick and energetic application of paint and a raw-ness that could offset the elements to be placed on top.  What I didn’t expect however was the softness that could also be achieved, gradual transitions of colour that suggest distance or depth of field.

3D Model of wall at Admiral Park

Experiments in modelling
Video pan of wall to be painted, for documentation. I like there imperfect nature, the tension that can come from the relative realism of the textures (taken from photographs) and the ‘unreal’ glitched generated models which the textures are place on. They can be read as both copies and replications, truthful while still abstract. While I do not view these 3d objects as works in themselves, they could be an interesting new material to create works from.

“Google Earth has developed an extended network of automated cameras, operators, satellites, aerial photographers, programmers, and terrain and map information to assemble an ever more convincing representation of the planet. This mostly automated system sometimes produces unexpected and wonderful artifacts. The bridges in these postcards are glitches that occur when the 2d satellite imagery and 3d terrain don’t line up quite right, or structures such as bridges are projected down onto the terrain below, creating fabulous and unintentional distortions.”

“I’m not sure when the mural above first appeared in  Vancouver, British Columbia. But I recently noticed a QR code painted over an offending tag that had been sprayed on the mural. Remarkably, the QR Code takes you to an image of the mural before it was vandalized.”
